In 1830 Andrew Jackson decided that we as a country deserved all the land of the Native Americans and that we as a people had something blocking us from our expansion. The peoples whose homes we took away, now were in our way. This idea stuck and was forced upon many Americans at that time. The “solution” for this was that all Natives should be sent to one area where they could go about their ways without bothering anyone. Just as we put dogs in a fenced off area when we don’t want them to interfere, we put Native Americans in “Indian Territory” when we saw that they might block the way of expansion of cities.
It took a decade for this to happen, but in 1838, the Federal Guard started ripping Cherokees who wouldn’t assimilate from their homes. The extent of this terror is atrocious. When there weren’t any parents at home, the soldiers would take children hoping that it would make the parents follow. Women were separated from babies, children from their parents. When the people finally did make it on the road, there was such poor care that thousands died of disease, famine and fatigue. Almost half of the Natives that set out on the Trail of Tears died.
This affected many at the time, and it still affects our nation today. The genocide that occurred in the beginning of our country’s history killed over 100 million people that we considered savages. The population will never be as great as it was at that time due to our oppression.
Our techniques were later used by Hitler in WWII to commit genocide against Jews.
